Testimonies of Christian Growth from Cambodia

Posted on Nov 9, 2012

We are so encouraged to see the work of the Lord in our midst, especially as some grow in their knowledge and love for God. Kimsreng is one of those. She is faithful even though she faces persecution; she asks questions about the new faith that she has, and she witnesses as well. One of the people she has witnessed to was her own friend. Kimsreng met her in the market; they shared many things and then spoke about church. Her friend told her that she is a Christian and goes to church. But she has been facing hard times because of that, and it discouraged her. So she took the position that she is 20% Christian and 80% others. She felt better that way because she can comfortably go to church and also worship other gods. And besides, she mentioned to Kimsreng that she goes to church because the church normally give gifts, and that’s the reason she became a Christian (goes to church). Kimsreng told her straight that first of all there is no such thing as a 20% Christian. It is either you follow God truly and wholeheartedly, or you actually reject Him. Kimsreng said Christians are people who are chosen by God, whose heart is truly made new in repentance of sin through Christ. And she also mentioned that if this dear friend’s motive to attend church because of the physical benefits (free gifts), then she really missed the whole point of following Christ: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me…” (Luke 9:23-26) We praise God for His amazing work in the hearts of His people here.

Ton (Kimsreng’s husband) shared about a friend who visited him recently. They were childhood friends but had not seen each other for a while. Last week he appeared at Ton’s house wearing a yellow robe and had a friendly chat with him. In the conversation, he suddenly asked Ton, why Ton doesn’t worship him as the Cambodians do to their monks. Ton was surprised and replied, “I have known you for a long time. We used to get drunk together and did other stuff. Now you come to me in a yellow robe, telling me to worship you?” The monk told him, “You are an unteachable man; no one can ever tell you what to do.”

Man centered religion elevates humans to the level of God. They think that by doing good things and being involved in spiritual matters, they can achieve godhood. But that’s the old lie from Satan himself. As Adam and Eve were fooled, so are many others. There is only one true, living God, and He took the form of man, humbled Himself and made himself nothing, and became obedient to death, even the death of the cross. (Philippians 2:4-8) — Rev. Mark and Wiwin Baldwin
