2018 Jan-Feb Banner Article: Refocusing the Vision: Zealous for Good Works by Rev. Casey Southerland

Posted on Feb 8, 2018

I find the Parable of the Talents (Matt. 25) to be both challenging and convicting.  Perhaps this is because I spent several years like the servant with one talent,  operating as though faithful stewardship meant simply not losing what you have been entrusted to keep.  But the parable clearly rebukes the servant who, in fear of his “hard” master, buried and saved the talent.  On the other hand, this parable of our Lord clearly rewards the servants who labored to multiply the talents entrusted to them.  “You were faithful over a few things” were words the master spoke only to the servants who were industrious and had gained more talents by their labors.  These were the servants who had done well.

Finding peace, security and rest in the Lord are wonderful graces from the Lord’s hand, but if we, whose lives are bought with the blood of Jesus, do not also exert ourselves for His Kingdom, we are falling far short of the high calling of faithfulness.  You might recall that Paul told Titus we should be “looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ” and what a comforting truth that is, but Paul goes further.  We must also see that God’s grace in saving us not only brings hope but also brings a new and higher purpose.  Paul continues, saying that Christ gave Himself for us, “that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.”  (Titus 2:13-14).

I am very excited for the opportunity ahead of me— to serve the Lord, as well as the Bible Presbyterian Church and her missionaries at home and abroad, as the next Field Director for Presbyterian Missionary Union, beginning in August of 2019.  It is my deep desire to encourage and challenge the saints in our churches toward a faithful ambition for the expansion of our King’s Kingdom in the United States and throughout the world.  Along those lines I have begun to ask the Lord for 15 new home and foreign missionaries.  Please join me in asking the Lord to call saints, young and old, into the work of missions to build His Kingdom.  “Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it” (Ps. 127:1a).  I look forward to zealously serving the Lord’s Kingdom with you.
